That’s true, and my favorite example was that Samuel L. Jackson requested a purple light saber. As for color choices in the expanded universe, I suppose it was up to the individual author what they meant at the time. I think Darth Vader’s black armor and red light saber may have evoked Nazi connotations to the first viewers of the original film.
