So Marvel ‘apologized’ in the typical ‘if you’re offended, we didn’t mean it, but sorry’ kinda way that cowards apologize in for things they laugh at behind your back. The “Oh you caught us! We’re sorry!” Bogus apology, for this little stunt: http://www.publiusforum.com/2010/02/08/marvel-comics-captain-america-says-tea-parties-are-dangerous-and-racist/
Yeah, glad to see Marvel, which has always been hackney leftist, going full bore Obama surrogates to the masses. Right down to using the slur that if I used would be considered homophobe, but when used by ‘tolerant’ leftists to describe the Tea Party is just a play on words. No really. No standards but double standards. I don’t care if Captain America is left of center. I mean, he’s a child of the New Deal, who probably really thinks FDR’s policies got the country out of the Depression, when really it was us being neutral for a few years longer, so we could bring industry up to speed fighting World War II. Popular history does that to people. What I care about is the blatant disrespect for long-time readers it displays. Just like G.R.R Martin can insult his readers with supposed impunity for daring to suggest that maybe Jim Butcher deserves a Hugo too. Or that maybe everyone should be able to either 1) show a photo ID or, 2) Have a person who can actually vouch that a voter is alive and from that district present when they perform one of the most solemn duties in a republic.
I’m tired of being insulted by people who are asking for my time, money, and attention. I’m tired of them thinking the Law of Supply and Demand doesn’t apply to them. And I’m tired of being lied to with their apologies, when we know full well they’ll do the same thing again.
This is why my Song of Ice & Fire series is in a “Go to Used Book Store” pile. And this is why I’m now done with Marvel too. When they can demonstrate they’re interested in entertaining rather than preaching to low information voters, I *might* reconsider my non-interest. But until then, they can go take a flying leap into their second bankruptcy, for all I care.
That “Social Justice Warrior” is a bogus term. It doesn’t really mean anything. And there aren’t any people really advocating for telling you how to live on the left anyway. Right? Right?
Well, tell me what a good name for the Puppy Kickers who destroyed the Hugos, the liars who turned a critique of journalistic ethics in gaming into a charge about feminism, or the people who say we can’t listen to heavy metal–or even Folk Metal–music because it’s too ‘masculine’ and ‘white’ might be?
Really? Now we go after a genre where a high percentage of the most popular bands are fronted by female singers as being “Too masculine”? And of course, then we can get into the whole question of why it’s ‘evil’ to be masculine. The only good males are geldings, it seems.
So ok, if we can’t call them SJWs, then I’m going to call them Assassins of Joy. Only they’re not nearly as funny as Vir Cotto. And they’re quite unlikely to bumble their way to the top of the Centauri Republic.
And just remember, sooner or later, these same people will come for a fandom you care about. So when will Free Speech matter to you?
is an unthinking puppet. This should be axiomatic. Regardless of your political sensitivities elsewhere, a writer is an artist. One who expresses ideas in words. One who thus lives by the necessity of free speech. If not that, then your art becomes propaganda, directed by the imperative of the State, your Class, or whatever other unthinking assumptions you are not allowed to articulate or question.
So whenever I hear people who make their living with WORDS, SPEAKING, blabber about, “Of course you have free speech, but…” I say they are self-deluding fools aiming the gun of censorship at their own head. Joss Whedon has learned this the hard way this week. And as much as I’m bemused at the REASON for his exile from the herd–what, he dared to make a cliche HUMAN, how dare he!–I have little pity for a man who attacked his own audience in the Social Media Shaming circus during #Gamersgate, and will assuredly do so again to regain his status in the Social Justice Herd. As an artist, he should KNOW better. Censorship and shaming, once employed, spread like napalm. Friendly fire is inevitable.
I am no friend of Pam Gellar, her attacks on people I *do* respect annoyed me. That said, she has absolute protection of Free Speech. Folks, we do not get to choose which speech we protect with the First Amendment and which is ‘personal’ to be shamed. To do this is to deny freedom, enable tyrants, and destroy our OWN calling to art. We support free speech against would-be murderers, whether the leftists of Charlie Hedbo, or Pam Gellar (and do note, they make no nice distinctions about OUR ideological spheres. They would kill left and right alike.) Or you side with the murderers and tyrants in returning our world to a Fifth Century Theocratic system. Personally, I would think the one thing everyone making their living with words would agree on is NOT wanting to side with the murderers who would put us all out of work. Self-preservation and all. Apparently, the Social Justice Herd doesn’t think through consequences that clearly.
Free Speech is an absolute, unalterable right. Or it does not exist at all. Every link of censorship forges our own chains.
